If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the ongoing celebrations in the wrestling world over Cody Rhodes’ triumphant moment of capturing the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 40, brace yourself because the praise won’t be subsiding anytime soon.
With wrestling roots that span several generations, Rhodes has earned the admiration of many, including AEW announcer Jim Ross.
In the latest episode of “Grilling JR,” Ross, when asked by co-host Conrad Thompson about Rhodes’ historic achievement, openly shared his sentiments, reflecting on their long-standing relationship dating back to Rhodes accompanying his father Dusty to wrestling events across various promotions.
“I love that kid,” Ross expressed candidly.
“God almighty, his ornery little a** was always [as] Mama Rhodes would allow him to; he’d come with Dusty to TV and things of that nature.
Good kid, love the kid. He’s got a heart of gold, and he worked his a** off to get to that point [on WrestleMania 40 Night Two] to have the match.”
Their professional reunion occurred with the inception of AEW, where Rhodes served as an Executive Vice President and helped bring Ross on board during the early days of the promotion.
Ross acknowledged Rhodes’ commitment and effort, recalling how Rhodes went the extra mile by visiting Ross’s home in Oklahoma for vignettes.
“He took it seriously, hiring JR, and I really appreciated that,” Ross remarked.
Regarding Rhodes’ second WrestleMania 40 main event, Ross praised the storytelling of the match and emphasized the importance of delivering what the majority of fans desire, even if the outcome seems predictable.
“They were booked into a corner. They had to switch the title or it would have upset a lot of apple carts,” Ross explained.
Taking a paternal tone, Ross advised Rhodes on financial planning now that he finds himself at the pinnacle of WWE success.
“He’s gonna make a lot of money,” Ross stated. “If I were him, if he hasn’t done it already, [I’d] hire a certified financial planner, cause that way, [they] can help keep you up on your quarterly taxes.”
Wrapping up his thoughts on Rhodes’ victory, Ross fondly recalled a congratulatory exchange with Rhodes, where Rhodes affectionately addressed him as “Cowboy,” a nickname stemming from Ross’s signature headwear.
“I’m so proud of that kid,” Ross concluded, reflecting on Rhodes’ journey to championship glory.
