Wrestling veteran Jonathan Coachman recently shared concerns about WWE’s decision to crown Becky Lynch as the new Women’s World Champion, pointing out the potential risks involved if she hasn’t signed a new contract with the company.
During a recent episode of RAW, Becky Lynch emerged victorious in a Battle Royal by eliminating Liv Morgan to capture the vacant Women’s World Championship. However, Lynch’s contract is due to expire in June, and she has not yet confirmed a new deal under Triple H’s new era, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her title win.
WWE Takes a Risk with Becky Lynch’s Title Win Amid Contract Uncertainty
On the Behind The Turnbuckle podcast, Coachman discussed the implications of Lynch’s victory, suggesting that her championship win indicates she may have inked a new agreement with WWE. Coachman emphasized the risks involved if Lynch were to leave the company with the title shortly after winning it, drawing parallels to past situations such as Bret Hart’s departure with the championship.
“Did Becky sign the new deal? Because if she didn’t and it’s up in about a month from what she said on the Ariel Helwani show, are they rolling the dice? Because the last thing you don’t want is your champion to have the strap when they walk out the door. We’ve seen that years ago with Bret Hart. It’s not a good look. So, it tells me, Tommy [Carlucci], she does have a new deal done,” Coachman remarked.
Bully Ray and Others Weigh In on WWE’s Decision
Despite fans’ desires for Liv Morgan to claim the title after Rhea Ripley’s injury-induced vacating of the championship, WWE opted to crown Becky Lynch. Former WWE employee Tommy Carlucci highlighted on the podcast that Lynch’s established track record made her a safe choice to fulfill the obligations of a top champion.
Hall of Famer Bully Ray echoed similar sentiments on the Busted Open podcast, explaining that in situations like Ripley’s injury, WWE strategically places the championship on a marquee star who can carry the title until the next desired star is ready.
Becky Lynch is not the only high-profile WWE star facing contract uncertainty. Her husband, Seth Rollins, and Drew McIntyre are also approaching contract expiry dates. It remains to be seen whether any of these key talents will remain with the company or pursue opportunities elsewhere in the coming weeks.
