The developer behind the unique Nintendo 64 adaptation of “Portal” has removed the game following a request from Valve. As detailed in a PC Gamer report, developer James Lambert had been working on the project since 2022 and released it last week.
After contacting Valve, Lambert was instructed to take the game down from Steam. In a Patreon update, he explained that Valve’s request was due to the project’s reliance on Nintendo’s proprietary libraries.
Lambert told PC Gamer via email that he believes Valve wanted to avoid entanglement with a project involving Nintendo IP.
Lambert expressed a desire to discuss the possibility of continuing “Portal 64” with Nintendo but acknowledged the uncertainty of such a prospect. He also mentioned considering a switch from the official Nintendo 64 SDK, Libultra, to the open-source library Libdragon.
However, Lambert stated he would only make this switch with Valve’s permission and is hesitant to commit to the substantial workload without assurance of the project’s viability. He observed that Valve doesn’t seem highly interested in the project, as he cannot meaningfully distribute it on Steam.
