Known by many names, such as The Last Son of Krypton, The Man of Tomorrow, The Man of Steel, and Big Blue, there’s no mistaking the iconic figure we all recognize as Superman.
Recently, when James Gunn unveiled a fresh lineup of DC Studios films, the spotlight shone brightly on Superman: Legacy. Now, with cameras rolling on the film, it’s fittingly commencing on the Man of Steel’s birthday. However, there’s a twist in the tale—a new title has emerged.
The once-touted Legacy subtitle has been shed, marking the first Superman film since the beloved Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve classic of 1978. Gunn, taking to social media, expressed his excitement about kicking off production and shed light on the reasoning behind the title evolution.
“Delighted to announce the commencement of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, coincidentally Superman’s birthday,” shared the director.
He continued, “Initially, I penned the script under the title Superman: Legacy. But as the final draft solidified, it became evident that the title should simply be SUPERMAN. Anticipate its arrival in July 2025.”
A keen-eyed observation of the Superman emblem featured in the film reveals a striking resemblance to the design seen in his Kingdom Come attire, envisioned by Alex Ross. The emblem boasts a sharper outline, a narrower red border, and a vibrant yellow and blue reminiscent of Henry Cavill’s costume from a decade past.
Notably, the emblem appears to be frosted over, perhaps alluding to Superman’s legendary Fortress of Solitude. One thing remains certain—the ‘S’ symbol still embodies the spirit of hope.
Gunn, caught off guard by the significance of the day, expressed his surprise as fans flooded social media with birthday wishes for Superman.
“Can you believe it? I’ve had today marked for shooting for months,” he replied to a thread comment. “I only found out about Superman’s birthday over the weekend when folks started asking, ‘Are you going to acknowledge Superman’s birthday?!’ It was quite the revelation.”
The ensemble cast for the film boasts impressive talents, with Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor and burgeoning star David Corenswet donning the cape as Superman.
Joining them are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Skyler Gisondo has been enlisted as Jimmy Olsen, with Sara Sampaio portraying Eve Teschmacher and Terence Rosemore taking on the role of Luthor’s henchman, Otis.
Prepare for Superman’s return to the big screen on July 11, 2025.
