Boss Team Games has unveiled two upcoming 16-bit platformers inspired by classic horror franchises: John Carpenter’s Halloween and the Starz TV series Ash vs Evil Dead. This announcement follows a recent reveal about a different Halloween game being developed with Unreal Engine 5 in collaboration with Carpenter. While the details of the second game were initially unclear, they have now been disclosed.
The new titles, RetroRealms: Halloween and RetroRealms: Ash vs Evil Dead, are a result of a partnership between Boss Team Games and WayForward, the developer renowned for the Shantae series. These games mark the beginning of Boss Team Games’ RetroRealms series and are designed to evoke the nostalgic feel of 90’s arcade games while staying true to the source material of the Halloween film and the Ash vs Evil Dead series.
Steve Harris, the CEO of Boss Team Games, shared his excitement about working on these projects. He emphasized the team’s passion for horror and their enthusiasm for collaborating with WayForward and the licensors to create engaging, retro-style games that honor the original franchises. The development process has been described as both challenging and rewarding.
In RetroRealms: Halloween, players will control Michael Myers and other characters from the 1978 film, battling through familiar settings and facing various evils.
On the other hand, RetroRealms: Ash vs Evil Dead allows players to take on the role of Ash Williams, fighting Deadites and other monsters in environments inspired by the TV series. Each game aims to deliver distinctive gameplay experiences that highlight the unique features of their respective franchises.
The RetroRealms games are scheduled for release on October 18 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. They can be purchased individually for $25 or together in a bundle for $50. The bundle offers bonus content, including the ability to incorporate characters from one game into the other, providing a crossover experience for fans.
