The collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Fallout continues with the impending release of the Fallout preconstructed Commander decks, set to launch on March 8. As anticipation builds with the commencement of MagicCon Chicago this weekend, enthusiasts get a sneak peek at the complete 100-card list for the Mutant Menace deck, showcasing four exclusive cards.
The Mutant Menace deck, themed around the malevolent mutations found in the Fallout universe, boasts Sultai colors (black, blue, and green). The deck revolves around two primary mechanics:
1. Radiation (Rad) Counters: Players accumulate these unique counters throughout the game. Upon drawing a card during their turn, they must “mill” or discard a card from the top of their deck for each rad counter. Discarding a land has no effect, but discarding anything else costs the player one life point while allowing them to remove one rad counter.
2. Proliferate: Cards featuring the “proliferate” keyword enable players to add one counter of every type they control upon being played.
The preconstructed Commander deck includes two legendary creatures: the “face” commander, The Wise Mothman, and the alternate commander, The Master, Transcendent:
The Master, Transcendent (Legendary Artifact Creature – Mutant)
- Mana Cost: 1 generic, 1 black, 1 green, and 1 blue
- Power/Toughness: 2/4
- Ability 1: Upon entering the battlefield, the target player receives two rad counters.
- Ability 2: Tap The Master, Transcendent, to bring any creature card milled this turn onto the battlefield under your control, with base power and toughness 3/3.
Unlike The Wise Mothman, The Master, Transcendent manipulates rad counters by seizing control of creatures milled due to radiation, offering strategic advantages.
The deck comprises 27 creatures, including 24 original card designs for the Fallout set. Notable exclusives among these are Harold and Bob, First Numens, and Lumbering Megasloth:
Harold and Bob, First Numens (Legendary Creature – Treefolk Mutant)
- Mana Cost: 2 generic and 1 green
- Power/Toughness: 3/3
- Abilities: Vigilance, Reach, and a unique recursion ability upon death.
- Harold and Bob also transform into an Aura enchantment, enhancing forest mana production at the expense of rad counters.
Lumbering Megasloth (Creature – Sloth Mutant)
- Mana Cost: 10 generic and 2 green (variable based on counters)
- Power/Toughness: 8/8
- Abilities: Trample and reduced mana cost based on counters among players and permanents.
Vaults from the Fallout lore are represented as Sagas in MTG, with Vault 12: The Necropolis being a prime example:
Vault 12: The Necropolis (Enchantment – Saga)
- Mana Cost: 4 generic and 2 black
- Effects: Initiates rad counters for all players, spawns Zombie Mutant tokens based on rad counters, and empowers Zombie or Mutant creatures with +1/+1 counters.
The Mutant Menace deck offers a diverse array of cards across various types, promising thrilling gameplay experiences for Magic: The Gathering and Fallout fans alike.
