Paige VanZant’s journey in the UFC showcased her potential as a formidable strawweight contender. Since her debut in 2014, she amassed a record of 5-4 in the promotion, securing victories over notable opponents like Felice Herrig and Rachael Ostovich. However, injuries became a significant obstacle in her later UFC career, particularly concerning her arms.
VanZant’s arm injuries began at UFC Fight Night 124 in 2018, during her flyweight debut against Jessica-Rose Clark. Despite breaking her forearm mid-fight while attempting a spinning back fist, she persevered until the final bell but ultimately lost via unanimous decision to Clark.
In an Instagram Q&A session with fans, VanZant disclosed the extent of her arm injuries, revealing that she had endured four arm breaks throughout her career.
She underwent three surgeries to address these injuries, which were primarily attributed to the broken forearm suffered during the fight with Clark. Despite having a metal plate inserted in her arm after the initial injury, VanZant experienced subsequent fractures, including twice through the plate.
Her arm troubles persisted, leading to the cancellation of a rumored bout at UFC 236 and the postponement of her fight against Amanda Ribas from March to July 2020. Unfortunately, when they eventually fought at UFC 251, Ribas secured a victory via armbar in the first round.
VanZant’s resilience in continuing to compete despite her arm injuries reflects her determination and toughness as an athlete. However, these setbacks undoubtedly had a significant impact on her UFC career and contributed to her eventual transition to other combat sports and ventures outside of MMA.
