A new demo for Visions of Mana has recently been released, and after spending a few hours with it, I’ve come to realize how much I’ve overlooked this cherished franchise throughout my life. Despite being aware of the series and having heard great things about it, I had never played a Mana game until now.
This is particularly surprising given my enthusiasm for JRPGs and action RPGs from Japanese developers. It’s ironic that, in a year filled with remarkable JRPG releases, I’ve only just discovered a whole new franchise with its extensive mainline entries, numerous spinoffs, and modern remakes.
The demo for Visions of Mana doesn’t provide much in terms of explanation or a tutorial, which leaves me feeling somewhat disoriented. However, the game presents a vibrant open world that I’m eager to explore, featuring a diverse cast of characters with unique abilities and spells.
The real-time, party-based combat system is engaging, being both accessible for beginners and challenging to master, which reminds me of my initial experiences with Dragon Quest and how it led me to explore its earlier titles.
From a gameplay perspective, Visions of Mana feels quite satisfying. The inclusion of a double jump, air dash, and sprint options makes movement more dynamic and enjoyable. The combat, both melee and magical, has a gratifying weight and impact, which enhances the overall experience. The tactile feedback and responsive controls contribute to making the game enjoyable to play.
Given my newfound appreciation for the Mana series, I’m now contemplating the best way to familiarize myself with its history. Should I start with the original game, Final Fantasy Adventure on the Game Boy, or opt for the Secret of Mana collection available on the Switch?
Alternatively, the 2020 release Trials of Mana might offer a more modern and approachable entry point into the series and its lore. I’m seeking advice from Mana fans on which would be the best route to take.
In the meantime, I might just wait for the official release of Visions of Mana on August 29, which will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This will allow me to delve deeper into the game and continue exploring this newfound interest in the Mana series.
