Hollywood heavyweight Michael Jai White recently heaped praise on Jon Jones, acknowledging the UFC champion’s remarkable ability to swiftly learn and adapt to various martial arts techniques.
White, a lifelong martial artist himself, shared that had MMA been as prominent during his prime, he might have ventured into active competition within the UFC. Despite the absence of a competitive career in his past, the 56-year-old frequently frequents MMA gyms, honing his skills alongside elite UFC fighters.
Michael Jai White discusses his chances against Jon Jones
During a stint training in Albuquerque, White had the opportunity to train alongside none other than Jon Jones. Impressed by White’s skills, Jones took to social media to commend the Hollywood star.
However, White, while appreciative of the acknowledgment, expressed humility, noting that consistent success against Jones in training might prove challenging due to Jones’ formidable abilities. In a recent appearance on the Jaxxon Podcast, White remarked,
“Not to sound arrogant but there’s going to be things that I do, that’s unusual to him, right? I have been [training martial arts] for a long time. But things I could get away with the first time, I probably wouldn’t get away with the second time. If we were grappling more, [Jon Jones] would have slammed me around the room.”
In response, Jones, renowned as one of the greatest combat sports athletes of all time, acknowledged the learning experience he gained from training with Michael Jai White.
In a post on White’s Instagram, Jones admitted to being humbled by White’s prowess during their session, praising White’s athleticism, impressive kicks, and wealth of knowledge not only in martial arts but in life.
Jones expressed gratitude for the opportunity to train alongside White, showcasing his respect for the Hollywood star’s skills.
Jones, having dominated the UFC light heavyweight division for nearly a decade, made a significant move up to heavyweight in 2023, capturing the UFC heavyweight title by defeating Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.
Despite initial plans for a title defense against Stipe Miocic in November 2023, Jones was sidelined due to a pectoral injury. Currently in recovery, the timeline for his return to action remains uncertain.
