The main event of ROH Supercard of Honor 2024 evoked deep emotions for all involved.
On April 5, 2013, the late Jay Briscoe achieved a career milestone by defeating Kevin Steen (now Kevin Owens in WWE) at Supercard of Honor VII to claim the ROH World Championship for the first time.
Eleven years later, his younger brother Mark, who had come close to championship glory in the past, seized the opportunity to challenge the reigning champion, Eddie Kingston.
Since his victory over Claudio Castagnoli in September 2023, Kingston had elevated the ROH World Championship, integrating it into the prestigious Continental Crown, defending it against a myriad of international challengers, and recognizing the significance of the date of his match against Briscoe.
Adding to the grandeur of the occasion, Briscoe entered his classic theme, “Gimme Back My Bullets” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, demonstrating his readiness to endure any hardship to emulate his late brother’s triumph.
Despite enduring a grueling battle, marked by bruises and bloodshed, Briscoe executed the ‘Jay Driller,’ his brother’s signature move, securing the pinfall victory to claim the ROH World Championship.
Following the intense match, Briscoe was enveloped in a shower of streamers from adoring fans and embraced by his family, who hoisted the new champion onto their shoulders in celebration.
The locker room emptied as fellow wrestlers, including luminaries like Jay Lethal and Matt Taven, joined the jubilant scene, with tears of joy flowing freely.
Although Briscoe and Kingston had fiercely contested the ROH World Championship at Supercard of Honor, they are slated to unite forces, teaming up with Adam Copeland at AEW Dynasty to confront the House of Black on April 21.
