Intergender matches have long been a point of contention in wrestling circles, sparking debates over their relevance and impact.
While some fans dismiss them as unnecessary diversions, others view them as opportunities to showcase the skill and ability of female wrestlers against their male counterparts.
Former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega has been a participant in several intergender matches throughout his career, and one particular bout holds a special place in his heart.
In a recent Twitch stream, Omega reflected on a memorable encounter where he teamed up with former AEW Women’s World Champion Riho.
“I was incredibly proud of our match on the Jericho cruise, where Riho and I faced off against Kip [Sabian] and Penelope [Ford],” Omega recalled, emphasizing the enjoyment and satisfaction derived from the experience.
“We managed to convey a compelling story to the audience, everyone had a blast, and thankfully, there were no injuries. It felt like we successfully presented a traditional intergender match.”
Expressing disdain for the conventional approach of segregating genders in mixed tag matches, Omega argued against the notion, asserting that many female wrestlers possess the capability to compete against male counterparts on equal footing.
However, he lamented one aspect of the match.
“It’s unfortunate that there was only one handheld camera capturing the footage, but I’m grateful that some documentation of the match exists,”
Omega remarked. The match would later be broadcast in its entirety on the February 4, 2020 episode of “AEW Dark.”
