Jerry Seinfeld had ambitious aspirations for his directorial debut in film. The comedian revealed on Tuesday his desire to cast Daniel Day-Lewis as a sugar drug lord in his Netflix comedy “Unfrosted,” which centers around Pop-Tarts.
“We have a sugar drug lord who controls all the world’s sugar, his name is El Sucre,” Seinfeld explained during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play it like Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood.”
Despite the lofty vision, Seinfeld admitted he never reached out to the actor. Kimmel reminded him that Day-Lewis is famously retired, with his last film being “Phantom Thread” in 2017.
“If there’s anything to come out of retirement for, it’s a Pop-Tart movie,” Seinfeld joked.
The film “Unfrosted” is a fictional origin story of Pop-Tarts set in 1963, depicting a competition between Kellogg’s and Post to create the iconic breakfast snack.
Seinfeld emphasized that while the rivalry is based on real events in Battle Creek, Michigan, the rest of the film ventures into comedic absurdity.
Starring an ensemble cast of A-list comedians including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, and Amy Schumer, “Unfrosted” promises to deliver a blend of historical inspiration and comedic lunacy. It debuts on Netflix this Friday.
