Hellverine, Marvel’s fusion of Wolverine and a Ghost Rider-style Spirit of Vengeance, is getting a new lease on life with an ongoing series following the end of his limited run. This fresh title will be penned by writer Benjamin Percy and illustrated by artist Raffaele Ienco.
Unlike the limited series that focused on Logan’s possession by the demon Bagra-Ghul, the new ongoing series will shift the spotlight to Logan’s son, Akihiro, who is now the Hellverine.
Akihiro’s return as Hellverine is significant given his previous death at the hands of Sabretooth during the ‘Sabretooth War’ storyline. The character was left with no apparent chance of resurrection after Krakoa’s fall.
However, he has now been resurrected with a demonic twist, and will begin his journey by teaming up with Doctor Strange. Together, they will work on controlling Akihiro’s new demonic powers, blending the occult with his vengeful abilities.
The new series promises “hellfire-fueled, claw-slashing action” as Hellverine carves out a new role in the Marvel Universe. The narrative will explore the merging of Akihiro’s and the demon Bagra-Ghul’s personalities as they learn to coexist. This storyline will continue the themes established in the previous limited series but with a fresh perspective through Akihiro’s new identity.
Jason Aaron, the writer behind the initial Hellverine concept, reflects on the success of the character’s introduction in the “Weapons of Vengeance” storyline. The enthusiastic fan reception, including the release of a Marvel Legends toy, led to the creation of this ongoing series.
Aaron, alongside artist Raffaele Ienco, is excited to delve deeper into the Hellverine’s mythos and expand on the demonic elements introduced previously.
The first issue of the new Hellverine series is set to hit the shelves on December 18. Fans can expect an exciting blend of action and occult themes as Hellverine embarks on a new chapter of his vengeful saga within the Marvel Universe.
