Helldivers 2 has burst onto the scene with a robust launch on both PC and PlayStation 5, yet the game’s surge in popularity has also led to a series of challenges, pushing Swedish developer Arrowhead Game Studios into what they describe as “crisis mode.”
The silver lining amidst these challenges is the imminent arrival of a fix aimed at rectifying the most pressing issues. Mikael Eriksson, the game director for Helldivers 2, shared in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that a patch designed to enhance matchmaking and address the most common crashing problems on PC is currently undergoing testing.
Should the tests prove successful, this patch will swiftly be deployed as a hotfix to PC players via Steam before being made available to PS5 users.
In a message posted on the game’s official Discord server, Arrowhead’s CEO, Johan Pilestedt, reassured players that the studio is diligently working to tackle matchmaking glitches, performance hiccups, PC crashes, and other issues stemming from the recent launch of this co-op shooter published by Sony.
“I just wanted to let you all know we’re working as hard as we can on resolving these, the volume of players exposed some shenanigans in the system that went past many, many, many hours of testing,” Pilestedt conveyed.
In the interim, Pilestedt advised players to team up with friends and steer clear of the game’s currently malfunctioning quick play matchmaking feature, as joining friends is functioning as intended.
Although Helldivers 2 currently holds an average user review score of “Mixed” on Steam, with many players attributing their negative reviews to the aforementioned issues, it stands as the top-selling game on Steam by revenue as of the time of writing. It reached a peak concurrent player count of over 64,000 on PC shortly after its release, according to SteamDB.
In our recent preview of Helldivers 2, we highlighted the game’s potential as a thrilling co-op experience inspired by Starship Troopers, appreciating the chaotic enjoyment it offers while also questioning its longevity amidst the saturated landscape of live-service shooters.
Arrowhead had confirmed prior to launch, via a post on the PlayStation Blog, that Helldivers 2 would receive free post-launch content updates, promising an evolving universe with fresh tools, challenges, and adversaries for players to confront.
