FromSoftware has potentially introduced its largest dragon yet in the new expansion Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. The studio’s success with dragons seems to correlate with their increasing sizes, and this latest addition might set a new benchmark.
Zullie The Witch, a YouTuber known for her in-depth analysis of FromSoft games, explored this new dragon, found dead in the Land of Shadow, in a recent video. This dragon could surpass all previous entries in terms of size.
Previously, the title of the largest dragon was held by the Dragon God from Demon’s Souls, which measured about 182 meters from nose to tail. Another notable giant was the dried corpse of Gransax in Elden Ring’s Leyndell, spanning approximately 328 meters.
However, with the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, a new dragon might have emerged as the largest, as its decayed remains are significant enough to be depicted on the in-game map.
The video by Zullie The Witch suggests that this new dragon is about 10.7 times larger than the Jagged Peak Drake, estimating its size at around 392 meters. This impressive scale makes it dwarf even the colossal bosses from Shadow of the Colossus. Fortunately for players, this massive dragon is already dead in the game, sparing them from what would have been an overwhelming battle.
The idea of constantly escalating dragon sizes within FromSoftware’s games has become an intriguing trend. This raises questions about the future direction of the studio’s game design, with possibilities ranging from scaling mountain-sized dragons to exploring entire dungeons inside a dragon’s body. These ambitious concepts align with what director Hidetaka Miyazaki has described as the “ideal fantasy RPG.”
Meanwhile, in other FromSoftware-related news, a fan is undertaking the challenging task of porting Bloodborne into Elden Ring. This project is complex, prompting the fan to recruit a team of modders to help. This initiative reflects the enduring popularity and influence of Bloodborne, despite Sony’s current lack of activity with the franchise.
