WWE commentator Corey Graves is content with his role behind the mic despite being medically cleared to return to the ring.
Forced into retirement in 2014 due to concussion issues, Graves transitioned into commentary, currently leading the SmackDown team. Speaking with Sportskeeda Wrestling’s Bill Apter, Graves expressed his focus on commentary rather than returning to in-ring action:
“I could give you five different answers for that, but I can honestly say my focus has really shifted,” Graves said. “I got cleared…but since I’ve slid over into the now lead role on Friday Night SmackDown in the commentary booth, that’s actually provided me with a lot more motivation and a new skill to learn and to focus on.”
Enjoying his role alongside Wade Barrett, Graves finds fulfillment in his commentary position:
“As much as this is the biggest sports entertainment company on the globe, it can be Groundhog Day from time to time…to have this new role, I’ve been able to put 100 percent of my focus and energy in that.”
While content with his current position, Graves remains open to the idea of wrestling again if the opportunity arises:
“If the opportunity ever presented itself where it made sense…I’m a willing participant…but I think I’ve scratched the itch fairly well recently.”
Reflecting on potential opponents, Graves mentioned CM Punk and Seth Rollins as ideal choices, albeit jokingly expressing hesitation about facing Gunther:
“I would love to step in the ring with Seth again…Punk…And as far as my personal favorite these days, I’m a big Gunther fan, I’m in no hurry to step inside the ring with The Ring General!”
Graves’ last match occurred at WrestleMania Axxess in 2014. As fans speculate about his return, Graves remains committed to his commentary duties.
