The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion in Elden Ring is controversially locked behind an optional boss that the majority of players have yet to conquer. FromSoftware, known for its challenging game designs, has made this decision despite potential consequences for sales.
To access the DLC, players must defeat two bosses: Starscourge Radahn, part of the main story, and Mohg, Lord of Blood, who is optional but essential for progressing to the expansion. Mohg is located in a remote and difficult-to-reach area, making the journey to him taxing. There are two known methods to reach Mohg, with the second method being recommended due to its more straightforward approach.
Players need both halves of the Haligtree Medallion to activate the Grand Lift of Rold, which transports them to the Consecrated Snowfield, where Mohg awaits. The journey through this area is described as extremely challenging, requiring a high level of preparation and skill, often suggested around level 80 or higher.
Mohg himself is known for his extreme difficulty and is categorized as one of the game’s toughest bosses. Players must adopt strategies based on their build and skill level, focusing on countering Mohg’s varied attacks, managing blood loss, and adjusting to his physical and fire damage output.
Upon defeating Mohg, players gain access to the Erdtree Shadow DLC area. This area is accessed through a significant landmark associated with Mohg’s defeat, providing a Site of Grace for convenience and ensuring Mohg does not respawn, following the game’s typical boss mechanics.
