Square Enix has unveiled that a group of individuals is facing criminal charges for engaging in the distribution of counterfeit merchandise in China.
In an official press statement, the gaming giant outlined that, in May 2023, nine individuals in Guangdong province were charged in connection with these illicit activities. Among them, six were implicated in the distribution of the fraudulent products, while three faced charges related to manufacturing.
The counterfeit merchandise involved characters from popular Square Enix titles, including Final Fantasy and Nier: Automata, and was confiscated as a result of the legal action.
Square Enix initiated the legal proceedings based on information obtained through independent investigations, coupled with collaborative efforts with an investigative firm and industry peers.
The company emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding its intellectual property, ensuring the delivery of superior products and services, and preserving and enhancing its brand image.
Square Enix stated, “[Square Enix] will continue to dedicate itself to the protection of its intellectual property so that it may provide better products and services while maintaining and enhancing its brand image.”
Furthermore, the company issued a reminder to both its customers and distributors to remain vigilant, urging them to take proactive measures to shield themselves against the perils of counterfeit products.
