The acclaimed indie platformer Celeste has surprised fans with a new release on the 6th anniversary of the original game’s debut. Titled “Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain,” this Nintendo 64-inspired 3D platformer offers a fresh perspective on Celeste Mountain and is now available for free download.
Developed and released by the original Celeste team through Itch.io, the game is compatible with both Windows and Linux PCs. The developers recommend using a controller for an optimal gaming experience. Additionally, Celeste 64 can be played on the Steam Deck by downloading the Windows version and enabling Proton Experimental.
Described as a “small, heartfelt 3D platformer,” Celeste 64 invites players to relive the magic of Celeste Mountain alongside Madeline. Impressively, the game was created within just one week to commemorate the anniversary.
Taking clear inspiration from iconic 3D platformers of the Nintendo 64 era, Celeste 64 once again tasks players with collecting strawberries while navigating the mountainous terrain. Notably influenced by Super Mario 64, some players have even created mods featuring Madeline wearing Mario’s cap.
However, some players have reported rough experiences, including stuttering and crashes, which is not unexpected given the short development timeframe. The Celeste team is actively addressing reported issues and has already released the source code for Celeste 64 on Github, allowing players to interact with the code directly.
The original Celeste, released in January 2018, received widespread acclaim for its compelling narrative and satisfying 2D platforming. It is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Developer Extremely OK Games is currently working on its next title, Earthblade, which is scheduled for release in 2024.
