Baldur’s Gate 3’s enormous critical success has caused logistical challenges for its developers, affecting the game’s continued development. Swen Vincke, Larian CEO and director of Baldur’s Gate 3 revealed that while the recognition is deeply appreciated, it poses a real problem.
With the game-winning numerous awards, Larian had to send teams to various award shows, rotating staff members to attend different events. This frequent travel started to interfere with their work on the game.
Vincke acknowledged that the game’s success risked becoming “too much.” While celebrating their achievements is gratifying, the ongoing nature of the awards season has been unexpectedly taxing. The team still attends award shows because they value the recognition, but Vincke wishes there could be a more streamlined approach to lessen the burden on the developers.
The director expressed that the continuous cycle of attending award shows has been emotionally draining. The inability to achieve closure on the project is something Vincke hadn’t anticipated. The ongoing attention has kept the developers in a perpetual state of engagement with Baldur’s Gate 3, preventing them from moving on to new projects as swiftly as they would like.
Vincke has voiced his desire for closure and a shift in focus to new projects. Larian is already working on two new RPGs, and Vincke is eager to concentrate on these endeavors. Despite the official end of Baldur’s Gate 3’s award season in April, the game continued to receive accolades, prolonging the need for travel and engagement with the awards circuit.
Recently, the Baldur’s Gate 3 team reconvened at the same location where they had previously planned the game’s final stages to discuss the future. Spirits remain high as they look forward to new projects, but the extensive travel and ongoing recognition for Baldur’s Gate 3 have undoubtedly been a significant commitment for the studio.
