Arc Raiders, originally revealed in 2021 as a free-to-play third-person co-op shooter from Embark Studios, has significantly evolved since its announcement. The game was initially intended to be Embark’s debut title, but it has since shifted to a premium model, combining PvPvE elements in an extraction shooter format. The release date is now set for 2025, indicating a substantial overhaul and refinement of its original concept.
Following the release of The Finals, a free-to-play PvP shooter praised for its fast-paced gameplay and destructible environments, Arc Raiders will be the next major release from Embark. The game will be available on PC (Steam, Epic, and Nvidia GeForce Now), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. A tech test is scheduled to take place on Steam from October 24 to 27, allowing players a preview of the game before its official launch.
The transition from a free-to-play model to a premium pricing strategy is a notable change for Arc Raiders. Unlike The Finals, which found success with a free-to-play model, Arc Raiders will be sold at a mid-tier price point, of around $40. This move reflects a belief that the game will benefit from a premium model, which is expected to better support its development and player engagement over time.
Embark Studios’ executive producer, Aleksander Grondal, explained that the decision to switch to a premium model was based on the game’s specific needs and the feedback from the development team. Grondal emphasized that this approach allows for a more focused and enjoyable experience, with regular updates and free content planned to enhance the game’s long-term appeal.
In Arc Raiders, players will take on the role of Raiders, fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. They must scavenge for resources and contend with both deadly machines and rival players. The game’s blend of cooperative and competitive elements aims to offer a unique experience in the extraction shooter genre, supported by a planned live service model to keep the game dynamic and evolving.
