Anna Sawai, known for her role in “Shogun,” is not just an actress but also a dancer and part of the J-Pop group Faky. However, despite her diverse talents, Sawai recently disclosed that her commitments to her band prevented her from auditioning for the role of Katana in “Suicide Squad.”
“After the training — multiple years of training — you are either lucky and join a group, or debut as a solo singer, or you’re gone,” Sawai shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I was like, ‘This is my chance!’ And then I go to my manager and he’s like, ‘You can’t audition.’”
“They basically told me that if I’m gone for over a month, the girls [the other members of FAKY] are not going to have anything to do. It felt like they were really tying me down, and because of my contract, I couldn’t leave until the time that I actually left [in 2018].”
Though Sawai missed the opportunity to audition, given the mixed critical reception of “Suicide Squad,” it might have been a blessing in disguise. However, with the DC Universe gearing up for a reboot and the uncertain future of “Shogun,” Sawai might still have a chance to portray Katana.
Anna Sawai Reflects on Karen Fukuhara’s Portrayal of Katana:
The role of Katana ultimately went to Karen Fukuhara, known for her role in “The Boys.” Despite missing out on the opportunity, Sawai holds no resentment. She praised Fukuhara’s performance while expressing her own interest in the role.
“She did an amazing job, and I respect her so much, and I love her,” Sawai expressed. “But also, I would have loved to audition for it.”
The absence of animosity between Sawai and Fukuhara is refreshing. With both actresses garnering acclaim for their work, perhaps a collaboration in an action-packed film could surpass the legacy of “Suicide Squad.”
