AJ Styles, a two-time WWE Champion and a household name in professional wrestling, has had a storied career spanning over a decade. However, few know that Styles almost didn’t make it to WWE, and was on the verge of rejoining his former promotion, TNA (now known as IMPACT). In a recent interview with SHAK Wrestling, Styles revealed the uncertainty surrounding his WWE debut and how he almost chose a different path.
Styles, who made his name in TNA with an 11-year stint, later transitioned to NJPW before considering a return to his roots. In 2016, he came close to signing a new contract with TNA alongside Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. However, he eventually chose to join WWE, making his debut at the Royal Rumble in January 2016.
But even after making a promising start, Styles’ WWE career was not without its doubts. The Phenomenal One revealed that former WWE CEO Vince McMahon wasn’t convinced of his talent, thinking the cheers he received at the Royal Rumble were a fluke. Styles was not originally scheduled to appear on Monday Night RAW the following day, but the scriptwriters may have had a hand in changing McMahon’s mind.
According to Styles, McMahon wanted him to be a “pitbull” in the ring, a role he was familiar with from his time in NJPW. Despite initial reservations, Styles eventually won over the WWE universe, becoming a two-time WWE Champion, three-time US Champion, one-time Intercontinental Champion, and even winning the RAW Tag Team Championship once.
Styles’ rags-to-riches story in WWE serves as a testament to his hard work and dedication. From almost returning to TNA to becoming one of WWE’s top stars, Styles has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with in professional wrestling. As he continues to thrive in WWE, fans can’t help but wonder what could have been if he had chosen to return to TNA instead.
