This Sunday at AEW Dynasty, a new AEW World Tag Team Champions will emerge as the ongoing tournament concludes with a highly anticipated ladder match between the Young Bucks and FTR.
In anticipation of the showdown, brothers Matt and Nick Jackson of the Young Bucks sat down with Sports Illustrated, hinting that Sunday’s clash may mark one of their final ventures into the stipulation they’ve become synonymous with.
“This particular ladder match is significant for us,” Matt Jackson acknowledged.
“We’re self-aware enough to recognize that this is likely one of our last ones. Each time you engage in such a match, you’re essentially shortening your career, and regardless, our days in the ring are numbered.”
With a wrestling journey that began in backyard wrestling in 2001 and evolved into their own indie promotion, success in Japan, and the creation of AEW, the Jackson brothers now boast over two decades of experience.
Matt has previously expressed his desire to retire without a grand announcement, disappearing “off the grid” from the wrestling world, while Nick has hinted at starting another independent promotion.
As they prepare for Sunday’s title bout, Matt shared that he and his brother have been familiar with ladders since childhood, assisting their father.
This exposure has eliminated fear from the equation despite their participation in numerous ladder matches throughout their careers, leaving them prepared for Sunday’s monumental clash.
Highlighting the upcoming Young Bucks vs. FTR 4 at AEW Dynasty, Matt noted that recent months have seen some significant changes to their on-screen presentation. This conscious decision to challenge themselves, including the use of their full first names, Matthew and Nicholas, aims to keep FTR guessing.
“Not to mention, we’ve got ladders to play with this go-around,” Matt added. “Ladder matches have been a staple for us over the years, and nobody executes them quite like us.
Fun fact — the last time we clinched the tag titles, it was during a ladder match in St. Louis. Can we repeat the feat? Undoubtedly, the tag team division relies on us to bring it back to prominence.”
In addition to pledging a third tag title reign, the Young Bucks assured fans that AEW will deliver an exhilarating show this Sunday.
Nick even boldly proclaimed that Dynasty will go down in history as one of the greatest pay-per-view events in wrestling, largely due to the electrifying performance expected from the Young Bucks and FTR, coupled with some surprises.
