With just a week and a day remaining until AEW’s inaugural Dynasty pay-per-view on April 21, Tony Khan continued to finalize the card’s details during Saturday’s “AEW Collision.”
Ahead of the episode’s tag team main event, play-by-play commentator Tony Schiavone revealed that the finals of the AEW World Tag Team Championship Tournament, set to take place at Dynasty between The Young Bucks and FTR, will be contested in a ladder match.
Ladder matches are relatively uncommon in AEW, with the Dynasty title bout marking only the 14th such match in the company’s five-year history and the fourth for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
While The Young Bucks have participated in two of the previous three, and FTR competed in the third, this will be their first encounter under ladder match rules.
According to Cagematch, The Young Bucks hold a 1-1 record in AEW ladder matches and a 5-8 record overall in ladder matches throughout their careers.
On the other hand, FTR lost their lone AEW ladder match and have only been involved in three ladder matches across three promotions, with a combined record of 1-2.
The announcement of this stipulation follows heightened controversy between The Young Bucks and FTR, as they used their feud to justify airing actual footage of the backstage altercation between Jack Perry and CM Punk at Wembley Stadium during All In 2023, which happened to be Punk’s final AEW match.
Notably, Wembley was also the location of the last encounter between The Young Bucks and FTR, where FTR emerged victorious, retaining the tag titles and securing a 2-1 lead in matches between the two teams.
The winners at Dynasty will make history by becoming the first-ever three-time AEW World Tag Team Champions, a feat yet to be achieved by any other team.
