A clever Palworld enthusiast recently uncovered an unreleased Pal creature concealed within the game’s code. The mysterious creature, currently identified as the “Dark Mutant,” was unveiled through a meticulous datamine of Palworld’s files. Accompanied by a 3D model, the creature also boasts a corresponding text log entry in the game’s Paldex, akin to Pokémon’s Pokédex.
According to the game’s description, “Some say a beam from a {characterName id=|DarkMutant|/} that has perfected its technique can tear holes into other dimensions. It’s even believed that certain species of Pals were born from such phenomena.”
In a conversation with Eurogamer, Palworld dataminer Brian Cozzens shared that he stumbled upon this intriguing design while working on an interactive online map for the game and a dedicated fansite showcasing the 3D models of Palworld’s approximately 100 Pals.
Astute Palworld players on Reddit were quick to notice the resemblance of the Dark Mutant to Pokémon’s Mega Mewtwo Y, prompting discussions within the community. This similarity is not an isolated incident, as Palworld has faced previous allegations of incorporating monster designs reminiscent of Pokémon.
In an unprecedented move this week, The Pokémon Company publicly addressed these concerns, stating that it is currently “investigating” whether Palworld has infringed upon its intellectual property rights. Despite these controversies, player enthusiasm for Palworld appears undeterred.
Notably, the game’s concurrent player count on Steam surpassed two million for the first time, establishing Palworld as only the second game on Steam to achieve this milestone, following PUBG.
