Axis Studios, an animation and VFX company known for its work on the acclaimed “backwards” announcement trailer for Dead Island, has closed its doors and laid off 162 employees. The Glasgow-based studio, which announced its closure on July 15, has ceased all production activities. This marks a significant loss in the creative industry, especially for those familiar with the studio’s influential contributions.
The company had an impressive portfolio within the gaming industry, working on major franchises such as Halo, Gears of War, League of Legends: Wild Rift, Magic: The Gathering, and Warframe. Their innovative and high-quality visual effects set a standard in the gaming world, helping to enhance the storytelling and immersive experience of these popular games.
In addition to their gaming achievements, Axis Studios made substantial contributions to television. They worked on high-profile projects such as Doctor Who, Love, Death & Robots, and The Incredible Hulk, showcasing their versatility and talent in TV production. Their well-regarded work attracted collaborations with major production companies like the BBC and Netflix.
Despite their success during the COVID-19 pandemic, where demand for animation and VFX services surged, Axis Studios faced a decline in customer projects and rising labor costs more recently.
These challenges led to severe cash flow issues, forcing the directors to explore various alternatives before ultimately deciding to appoint administrators. The closure of Axis Studios represents a significant loss for Scotland’s creative industry and the many renowned clients they served.
